Atlas Restaurant

I have had many meals at Atlas! It was everything we needed and wish I can eat their food every week. I had just learnt Atlas will be moving so we will make sure we pay a couple more visits. Love the lamb tagine!

Limited food choice. Limited wine choice

Quite disappointed in Atlas Restaurant. We went there expecting a flavourful Moroccan meal and instead, found all the dishes to be very non-authentic and a number of the dishes came out too sweet (especially the tagine). For appetizers we ordered the Eggplant Zaalouk (honestly, if I did not know it was an eggplant dish I would have thought it was a poor tasting salsa dish, it had a ton of tomato in it and not too much else of anything. Only the flatbread that was served with this was actually quite nice however that's just a basic flatbread that should be done right), Beef Kefta (it was okay, maybe a 2/5. Missing a lot of flavour and the consistency of the Kefta meat was not quite right), loubia (skip this one), tagine of lamb (waaaaay too sweet. Both my date and I thought the chef accidentally put too much sugar in here. It was terrible). All the dishes were disappointing. Would not recommend and I have no clue how this restaurant has such high ratings

Food was extremely mediocre for the price range. Nice vibe and service.

Exquisite flavours. Lovely presentation. Great service. Good ambience. We started with the amlou with harcha, the briouat, and beef kefta (really, really good). Then we shared a chicken tagine and a fish tagine. Both were very flavourful and delicious. We ended with the m'hanncha (which was a very generous portion!), the chocolate and cadamom tarte, and pommegranate sorbet. Everything was delightful! It's no wonder this place has the reputation of being the best French Moroccan restaurant in Toronto!

Their recipes aren’t the same as traditional Moroccan dishes, rather gain inspiration from them based on Chef Doug Penfold’s experience while travelling. Take the short rib tagine ($55), it’s not heavily spiced so the flavours are somewhat muted and even the steam that escapes from the Le Creuset tagine isn’t overly aromatic. What you’re left with are short ribs that are tender and tastes of beef, and plump chanterelles filled with the cooking liquid. The dish is like a beef stew with more herbs rather than a traditional tagine with the bold colours and flavours that are synonymous with paprika and chili. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a tasty dish, but just seems bland if you’re expecting tagine. Atlas does offer starters that incorporate stronger Middle Eastern flavours. The briouat ($15) is like a Moroccan cigar except stuffed with tons of savoury sautéed mushrooms before being wrapped tightly in phyllo pastry. Add a bit of herby harissa sauce and the briouat’s taste completely changes as the earthiness of the fungi mellows. Just be warned, it’s piping hot so try to restrain yourself from biting into the starter immediately. It’ll be difficult as it smells heavenly.
